Nokia’s Linux tablets will become “phones”

Ever since Nokia released the first Nokia 770 internet tablet, I’ve been waiting for the day when they can finally bring their collective selves to put a GSM chip on the tablet. As per recent statements made by Mr. Ari Jaaksi of Nokia, this seems to be finally happening. LinuxDevices has also picked up on this topic.

Effectively, this will then turn the next generation of Nokia’s tablets (whatever it will be called, 8xx or 9xx, etc.) into devices capable of connecting to the internet through the cellular network. As the statement of Jaaksi is quite reserved, and limits itself to 3G/HSPA access only, it kind of hints that only data support on 3G would be planned (ie. no voice or 2G). But of course, this remains to be seen…

Anyhow, as these devices are Linux-based from the design table up, this will again be a good step forward for getting Linux and open source software ever more popular in people’s pockets.

This is first thing in the morning in GMT+8 timezone, and the store said: SOLD OUT. Quite a surprising result. Must have been a popular phone?

The BUG is ready to ship, attempts for a Lego-like development experience

Word is out that Bug Labs will be shipping it’s BugBase product, together with it’s modules, starting next week.

The BUG attempts to enable a Lego-like experience to developing devices and gadgets. This is quite a cool idea. What is offered is a base machine (BugBase), which is effectively an ARM-based Linux board in a casing with a small LCD screen and four extension ports where to plug modules. Available modules as of now include an LCD screen, a GPS receiver, a motion detector/accelerometer and a 2 megapixel camera. A much-awaited WiFi module is said to be in the works.

No more gnomefiles.org

Usually when looking for a particular kind of software application for my GTK-based Linux desktop, I would go look in the gnomefiles.org software repository. Again today, I found myself in need of a mindmapping software, and off I went to gnomefiles.. Only to find..
