Igelle v0.5.0: Graphical desktop, server and handheld editions
The Igelle project produces the Igelle Operating System, a Linux-based operating system that is designed to be portable, and that can run on various devices including cellular phones, smart phones, PDAs, internet tablets, laptops, UMPCs, desktop computers, server computers and potentially other embedded computers and home electronics.
This announcements marks the v0.5.0 release of the Igelle OS, which is delivered in desktop, server and handheld editions for Intel x86 and ARM architectures.
Igelle graphical desktop
The graphical desktop edition of Igelle is provided for Intel x86 compatible computers (normal desktop PCs and laptops). The graphical desktop aims to provide a usual computer desktop environment with file management, multimedia features and productivity tools. Additional software (such as openoffice.org) can be installed in addition to the base Igelle OS. Igelle desktop is not based on any conventional desktop environment (such as KDE, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE, ..), although it uses some components from these projects. Igelle desktop is very lightweight in comparison, and runs quickly and with fairly low memory requirements.
The graphical desktop is relatively mature (with some natural quirks here and there), and can be used for everyday work if these occasional quirks are tolerated. All testing and comments would be most highly regarded.
Igelle server edition
The Igelle server edition is provided for Intel x86 compatible computers, and is called “server”, although it could also be labelled as “minimal” or “base”. This edition includes only the most basic components to boot into a basic, fully functioning text-based Linux system. This can include software development tools, and can be enhanced further to provide a very customized Linux system.
Igelle Touchphone Lite for handheld devices
Igelle Touchphone Lite is a version for handheld/PDA/mobile phone types of devices, which are characterized with a touch screen interface, fairly low storage space and RAM, as well as a GSM modem. Effectively, the FIC NEO1973 serves as the reference phone for this category. As part of the v0.5.0 release, a complete installer is also provided for this phone.
This build is still relatively immature, and probably not mature enough for everyday use. For GSM functionality, the freesmartphone.org framework is used, however it does not probably work out of the box, and requires further tweaking.
Source code and customized builds
Aside from the readily-made installers and images (as detailed above), Igelle also has a very strong build system, and can be used to make customized images and installers for advanced use. By downloading the source code and producing your own builds, it is easy to produce images for specialized use, or simply to make “your own operating system”.
Download Igelle
Igelle downloads are available at www.igelle.org/download. Please post any comments or experiences.

Hi, I’m interested in trying out Igelle but for two days now, the download doesn’t work properly. The connection gets lost between 1 and 160 MB so that I’m unable to download an image here.
Thanks!
There isn’t any apparent problems observed on the download server, and I believe others have been able to download successfully. Does anyone else have downloading problems? Perhaps trying again with a different browser/download manager is worth trying. At least Firefox and wget should be quite reliable.
